Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg remains top tourist attraction: survey

Miniatur Wunderland leads "Top 100 Sights in Germany" in survey by German National Tourist Board

The Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg, created by the brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun, has topped the list of "Top 100 Sights in Germany" for the third time in an online survey by the Deutschen Zentrale für Tourismus (DZT). More than 13,000 visitors from over 50 countries took part in the latest survey and voted the Europa-Park theme park in Rust, Baden into second and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria into third place.

The prize is particularly important to the Braun brothers. Frederik noted: "We decided to risk expansion despite corona-induced losses and an uncertain future. This has caused us many a sleepless night in the last few weeks. But this award gives me hope. I am optimistic that interest is unbroken and that people will visit us after corona and Hamburg as well."

Miniatur Wunderland on growth course

The Monaco/Provence section of Miniatur Wunderland is due to open in 2021. From 2022, 3,000 square metres will be added on the other side of the Fleet. Since it opened in 2001, the Miniatur Wunderland has grown to become the world's largest model railway layout on around 1,500 square metres. Around 19 million visitors have visited the attraction in Hamburg's Speicherstadt hitherto. Braun remarked: "This title feels a bit unreal. We are less than 20 years old and the fact that we are already as well-known and popular abroad as Neuschwanstein Castle, Cologne Cathedral or Europapark makes me incredibly proud and grateful."

Visitors to www.germany.travel can enter their favourite sights, leisure facilities, events, cultural sites or natural landscapes in a special section and the information is used by the German National Tourist Board (DZT) for the ranking. The latest survey began on November 14, 2019 through July 31, 2020.
