Port of Hamburg remains key transhipment hub for Austria

Only slight drop in Austria shipments via Hamburg despite pandemic - container transport by rail popular

Austrian overseas volumes via the Port of Hamburg in 2020 dropped only slightly compared to 2019, according to a survey by Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM). Although a decline of 15-20 per cent was recorded in the first half of 2020, the losses were almost recovered in the second half of the year. Container depots in Austria had reported more volume in the second half of 2020 than in the previous year. More growth is expected for Q1 of 2021.

2020 volumes to be exceeded in 2021

Although the lockdown in Austria is expected to last until Easter, the maritime transport industry expects to exceed 2020 volumes this year, according to HHM. Austria ships mostly fittings, machinery and equipment, timber, paper and beverages via the Port of Hamburg.

Hamburg remains Austria's most important transhipment hub

The Port of Hamburg has led the way in Austria's container traffic since 2001. Austrian companies value the port's rail connections and global liner network as most containers arrive in Austria by train. In 2018, around a third of Austria's total container volume was handled in Hamburg. The Port of Hamburg's representative office in Vienna is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, making it the oldest branch worldwide.
