Fegebank added: "Hamburg is getting another excellent research network that will bring even more top international researchers to our city." Prof. Dr. Frank Fehrenbach, the spokesperson for the presidency of HIAS, remarked: "Our excellent fellows will not only spend several months living and working in Hamburg, but will also provide new research impulses for the local scientific communities.” Several events will be held to encourage public interest in HIAS.
The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) opened its doors Thursday (October 29, 2020) in Rotherbaum after several years of planning to welcome academics from all corners of the globe. During the opening ceremony, Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality, said: "The Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study has what it takes to become a Hanseatic flagship of science and research.” The first fellows including a literary scholar, an artist and a microbiologist introduced themselves and their projects. Interdisciplinary research in HIAS will focus on pressing issues facing society, commerce, politics, art, music, the humanities and natural sciences.
Events for the public
Tandem partners for fellows
Among the fellows of the HIAS year 2020/2021 are Dr. Katrin Hammerschmidt, a microbiologist and evolutionary researcher from the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Anna Katharina Schaffner, writer and literature professor from the University of Kent, and Thomas Hirschhorn, a world-famous Swiss installation artist. All three will work in Rothenbaumchaussee 45, near the university, and live in the guest house there. However, the COVID-19 pandemic will see only a small group of fellows arrive to commence work in Hamburg. The plans foresee up to 20 fellows annually at HIAS in future. HIAS is backed by nine academic institutions in Hamburg who will provide each fellow with a tandem partner to forge links with researchers in the city and the respective scientific circles.
