Hamburg to host Dance Triennial 2026

18 July 2024
German government and city provide over EUR 1.5 million for new dance festival

The City of Hamburg is to host the Dance Triennial 2026 backed by the German Federal Cultural Foundation which will provide up to EUR 950,000 in funds while the city will pay EUR 600,000. The festival is expected to showcase all the latest trends in contemporary dance and attract new audiences.

Stage for multifaceted expression

"This success is due to Hamburg's outstanding success in dance over the past decades and the great desire of the very different players to work together creatively," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. The city won the bid for the Dance Triennial based on a joint application by the Hamburg Ballet, the Hamburg Ballet School, Kampnagel and K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg. This beacon event will showcase all forms of dance including ballet, urban dance, hip-hop as well as the Black dance community. The diverse forms of expression and decentralised approach should raise the international profile of the event. "We want to make the diversity of dance and its artistic and social potential even more visible in Hamburg and all over Germany," said Kerstin Evert, artistic director of K3.

Hamburg to create synergies for dance

The Dance Triennial replaces the Dance Congress held by the German Federal Cultural Foundation from 2006 to 2022. The new event focuses on long-term interdisciplinary collaborations. "We want to show many different dance styles and create synergies to develop and rethink dance in all its facets," said Amelie Deuflhard, Director of Kampnagel. New training schemes  will be tested and links established between artistic practice, research and health. The Federal Cultural Foundation is now seeking to appoint a person or a team as artistic director of the Dance Triennial 2026. The  artistic concept will be developed in co-operation with all the local stakeholders and institutions. The deadline for applications is August 31, 2024
