Around EUR 500,000 for festivals and projects that boost diversity in 2024

The Ministry of Culture and Media has earmarked almost EUR 500,000 in funds for festivals and projects that boost cultural diversity in Hamburg, a press release said Tuesday (January 30, 2024). A total of EUR 90,000 are available for projects and EUR 405,000 for festivals.

Ministry's stance against racism

"At a time when our open society is coming under increasing pressure, we  want to take a stance against racism and xenophobia and for a society in which different cultures, religions and people can live together peacefully," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. Artistic projects are important as they bring people together and stir up interest in other forms of expression. The jury has selected projects that reflect diversity and sustainable artistic concepts.

Funded projects and festivals

A total of 13 intercultural art and culture projects will receive between EUR 4,000 and 10,000 each. The Black History Month, an educational series of events organised by the Initiative of Black People in Germany (ISD), will receive EUR 10,000 this year.  A total of EUR 405,000 from the culture and tourism tax will go towards festivals with supra-regional appeal and focusing on intercultural themes, including the transcultural festival "fluctoplasma - 96 hours of art. Discourse. Diversity", the "KRASS Kultur Crash" festival in Kampnagel, the "altonale/STAMP" and the German-Turkish "Theatre Bridge Festival" at the MUT Theatre. The W3 - Werkstatt für internationale Kultur und Politik wll also receive funds  from the culture and tourism tax for its "in:szene" scheme.
