128.000 m² for life sciences in the Altona Innovation Park

1 October 2025
The business development and investment agency Hamburg Invest has launched the marketing of space for life sciences in the Altona Innovation Park at the northern tip of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld.

Up to 128,000 square metres of gross floor space for research, development and technology-oriented companies will be created on around 8.4 hectares in the Altona Innovation Park. The location focuses on life sciences, nano and laser technologies, material sciences and quantum technologies and benefits from its close proximity to world-renowned research institutes such as the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the European XFEL X-ray laser, the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine ITMP and the University of Hamburg.

Once the functional plan has been finalised in early summer 2025, the open space planning competition will start in the fourth quarter. The aim is to create an urban quarter with public ground floor zones, a green centre and low-car traffic. New buildings are expected to be realised from 2027. Construction of the DESY Innovation Factory is currently progressing rapidly. The shell is nearing completion. From 2027, around 3,000 square metres of usable space for high-tech companies with physical laboratories and offices will be available there.

tecHHub Hamburg in the Innovation Park

The tecHHub Hamburg is already in operation as the first building in the neighbourhood. The construction time was only 14 months. HIE realised 5,600 square metres of gross floor space at a cost of 35 million euros. The tecHHub Hamburg is fully let to Start-up Labs Hamburg and is home to a wide range of ambitious companies that are developing therapies against HIV, safe cancer diagnoses or innovative active ingredients from alpacas. young technology companies and research teams find cost-efficient laboratory and office space for biological and chemical applications here. The high occupancy rate underlines the market demand for modern laboratory locations in Hamburg.

Innovation Park Altona presented at Expo Real

The official marketing of the Altona Innovation Park began with an industry event at the Hamburg Business Club, to which HIE invited around 120 guests, and the relaunch of the project website innopark.hamburg/altona). From 6 October, the Altona Innovation Park will be presented together with the three other Hamburg innovation parks Bergedorf, Harburg and Finkenwerder at Expo Real at the joint Hamburg stand B2.430.

The Hamburg.HafenCity.Talk with Senator Karen Pein, Dr Andreas Kleinau (HafenCity GmbH) and Dr Rolf Strittmatter (Hamburg Invest) will take place at 16:00 on the opening day.

"Hamburg's innovation parks are the places of the future for talent and technology-orientated companies. With the marketing launch of the Altona Innovation Park, we are offering space that enables research, laboratory operations and company growth in equal measure and creating short distances to DESY and the universities. For project developers, investors and users, the Altona Innovation Park is a clearly structured location with resilient timelines and reliable development," says Dr Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest.
