"This decision is painful for all of us, but unfortunately unavoidable," said Andy Grote Senator for Sports. "I am impressed by the great energy with which the organisers have worked out modified concepts to hold major sporting events in Hamburg while observing infection control. All the more reason for us now to do everything we can to ensure Hamburg's major sporting events can take place as usual next year in our active city."
Organizers and city reach agreement in wake of corona
The organisers of large sporting events including En Garde, MHV and Ironman Germany and the city of Hamburg have agreed on postponements until 2021 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. These and other big sporting events like the Haspa Marathon, EuroEyes Cyclassics and the World Triathlon Series Hamburg, which attract thousands of athletes and spectators every year, had initially been postponed until late summer and autumn 2020.

The 35th Haspa Marathon Hamburg will go ahead on April 25, 2021. The organizers expressed sympathy with the participants, who had signalled their support until the end. However, the work has not been in vain and will go towards plans for 2021. "We have to look ahead now and will do our utmost to make sure that our athletes can enjoy extraordinary racing experiences next year," said Oliver Schiek, Managing Director of Ironman Germany.
Planning security
The 100th anniversary of the Hamburg Jumping and Dressage Derby had been fully planned and all the tickets sold. The celebrations will get underway in 2021. "We are happy and grateful that we have made a decision in the interest of the health of the population and in close co-operation with the City of Hamburg and the organisers of other major sporting events," said Volker Wulff, Director of the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby. "This gives everyone planning security and the anniversary will be celebrated afterwards. We won't let that be taken away from us," he stressed.
