Germany to host European Football Championship from June 14-July 14, 2024 countdown underway in Hamburg

The countdown to UEFA Euro 2024 is now underway in Hamburg after a campaign launched in June to get residents to score 365 goals under the motto of "One Year To Go". The opening match will kick off in Hamburg, which is one of ten German cities hosting the championships.

Europe to look to Hamburg next year

"Soccer will ensure that all of Europe looks to Hamburg next year," said Christoph Holstein, State Councillor for Sport, at the launch event for UEFA Euro 2024. Thus, Hamburg Marketing GmbH wants to use the tournament as an opportunity to draw global attention to the city. "My hometown of Hamburg is a sports-loving and hospitable city. Cosmopolitanism, internationality, commitment to diversity and passion for sport are written in capital letters here," said Patrick Esume, commissioner of the host city. Almuth Schult, national goalkeeper, said: "Major tournaments like the European and World Championships are always special. Not only for me as a player, but people from different countries and cultures meet around the games. This creates a unique atmosphere full of anticipation and emotion in the stadiums and beyond."

First volunteer scheme at UEFA Euro 2024

The championships will be held under the theme of "United by football. United in the heart of Europe" in Germany with 24 nations. Five matches will be played in Hamburg's Volkspark Stadium in front of 50,000 spectators. Hamburg will also host the preliminary round group draw on December 2, 2023 in the Elbphilharmonie. This large-scale event will decide in which of the six groups the 24 best teams in Europe will compete against each other. The quarter-finals will be held on July 5, 2024. UEFA is also launching a new volunteer scheme with the host cities. Around 1,600 volunteers needed in Hamburg to work in the stadium or the city for the duration of the championship. Applications can be submitted online. A fan festival will be held on Hamburg's Heiligengeistfeld.
