Hamburg presents cultural events for UEFA Euro 2024

Fans can look forward to dance performances, hip hop and soccer-themed operas

The City of Hamburg, which is one of ten host cities of the 2024 European Football Championships, announced Monday (August 21, 2023) cultural events to be held in the run-up to and during the tournament. Fans can look forward to several dance, music and opera performances backed by the Euro 2024 Football and Culture Foundation. Five matches will be played in the Volksparkstadion from June 16, 2024.

Hip hop battles and soccer-themed opera

"Many of Hamburg's cultural institutions have developed creative projects to whet people's appetites for the games and show how diverse and surprising the connections between culture and soccer are," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media in Hamburg. Events will kick off in the Kampnagel theatre, which has come up with one of the focal points called "Football moves people". The first productions will be presented during the International Summer Festival through August 27, 2023. More performances will be staged from the 2023/24 season. Kampnagel and the Football Club St. Pauli are bringing the world's largest hip-hop battle Juste Debout featuring 140 international dancers to Hamburg in late May 2024. The soccer club will also stage a project with electronic artist Matthew Herbert and organizers of the Reeperbahn Festival. Herbert will compose works for two ensembles to be performed live during a football match. Opera fans can also look forward to a 90 minute, football-themed opera staged by the Opernloft.

Final Draw in Elbphilharmonie

"We want to use the unifying power of sport to focus on commonalities in an increasingly diverse society and to move closer together as a country," said Andy Grote, Senator for the Interior and Sport. The "Final Draw" will be held in the Elbphilharmonie on December 2, 2023. Then, Europe's 24 best teams will be divided into six groups of four for the championship which is being being held in Hamburg, Berlin, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart under the theme of "United by Football".

Around 50,000 spectators are expected to flock to the matches in Hamburg alone. A fan festival will also be held on the Heiligengeistfeld. Around 1,600 volunteers are being recruited for events in the stadium and across the city. Group matches will be played on June 16, 19, 22 and 26 followed by the quarter-finals on July 5, 2024.
