"The reopening of Terminal 2 means we are offering our passengers enough space to observe social distancing rules easily and during peak hours," said Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. "Passenger numbers have risen to up to 10,000 daily after recently very quiet months." However, this does not yet mean a return to normal operations. Last week, Hamburg Airport had only 15 per cent of the passengers that passed through the airport in the same week in 2019, said Bromm.
Hamburg Airport is reopening Terminal 2 on Friday (May 28, 2021) in response to rising passenger numbers. The pandemic had forced the terminal to close for six months and it only opened after a short-term increase in passenger numbers on weekends during school holidays in northern Germany. Corona-induced regulations on social distancing will be enforced this summer at the airport.
Passenger volume picking up
Airport to make travel safe
Summer business may hold a glimmer of hope for the airport. Under a regulation in place since May 13, 2021, passengers returning from a risk area can be exempted from mandatory quarantine, if they present a negative test, proof of vaccination or recovery. Safe travel at the airport remains a top priority. Passengers can avail of contactless check-ins and coronavirus tests. The number of parking spaces in the multi-storey car parks will be increased as Terminal 2 reopens.
