Foundation stone laid for new technology hub in Altona - start-ups to start work in 2024

The foundation stone was laid Wednesday (July 5, 2023) for the Techhub Hamburg which is being built in the Innovation Park Altona at a cost of EUR 40 million. The ceremony was attended by Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and other partners. The hub is being built near the DESY research centre and other facilities of the University of Hamburg in Science City Bahrenfeld. Office and laboratory space for companies and researchers will be available on five floors from 2024.

Enabling innovations in life sciences sector

"Hamburg is reaffirming its commitment via the Techhub to linking business and science more closely. Researchers and innovative companies can work in an innovative network with funds from the economic development agency. We are creating a space that will also enable commercially successful spin-offs and innovations," said Leonhard.  "The Techhub will allow us to meet the high demand for laboratory space in the life sciences sector," said Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. "That will boost Hamburg as a scientific and business centre and put it on the global map."

Techhub Hamburg in Altona Innovation Park

Hamburg Invest and Techhub Hamburg are implementing the project on behalf of the Ministry of Economics in a bid to meet the growing demand for space and backed by DESY. The façade of the new building will be made of Kebony wood and a canopy system for greenery. The DESY Innovation Factory II technology and start-up centre will also be built in Altona by 2026. The various buildings and initiatives should create an ideal environment for young technology companies and research institutions in the  life sciences. Hamburg Invest will be happy to provide information about the available space in the Techhub.
