7 April 2025
Positive business return for 2024 - investment of EUR 20 million by 2027

Hamburg Airport has reported a business result of EUR 20.4 million for 2024 up significantly  on a profit of EUR 6.6 million in 2023, a press release said Thursday (April 3, 2025). Its balance sheet increased by EUR 8.4 million to EUR 711.2 million while sales revenue rose from EUR 259.4 million in 2023 to EUR 284.6 million - a rise of EUR 25.2 million thanks to strong growth in passenger demand. The airport also announced plans to invest EUR 20 million in terminal facilities ie., service, speed and cleanliness as well as various infrastructure measures as part of the HAMUpgrade scheme.

Half a million passengers more than planned

"2024 was a good year for Hamburg Airport," said Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport. The airport handled half a million more passengers than planned, resulting in increased revenue in the aviation sector, passenger services and sales rents from catering and shops. Around 14.8 million passengers travelled through Hamburg Airport in 2024 over 13.6 million in 2023 and 17.3 million in 2019. Private travel now accounts for the largest share of passengers  at around 78 per cent while business trips account for around 21 per cent. One per cent of passengers cited “workation” i.e., a mix of vacation and work, as their reason for travelling.

The number of trainees and dual students also came to a new high with 49 trainees, seven integrated trainees and four dual students. Berit Schmitz, Managing Director of Hamburg Airport, pointed out: “In 2024, 21 new trainees started with us in nine professions –a record at the time. This year we are even setting a new record with 23 apprenticeships."

Investments of EUR 250 million by 2035

The positive result is encouraging and the airport now plans to invest some EUR 20 million from 2025 to 2027, according to Kunsch. The "HAM Upgrade" scheme marks the start of measures such as new CT scanners at security checkpoints, expanded Slot & Fly and better passenger control through smart gates. The airport is also modernizing seating in the terminals, adding more water dispensers and comfortable lounge corners. It will also create new, interactive children's play areas by the summer holidays.

Hamburg Airport also plans to invest EUR 250 million in Net Zero 2035 of which EUR 70 million will go towards building a wind farm. Six wind turbines are now being tendered for the Heidmoor wind farm and will be awarded in the next weeks. Given the gradual conversion of the vehicle fleet to alternative drive systems and the connection to the city's district heating network in 2024, Hamburg Airport is set to become the first major airport in Germany to achieve zero-emission ground operations. The baggage handling system in Terminal 1 and the Airport Plaza are also being upgraded. The total investment volume for the first module of the HAM Bag project comes to EUR 80 million.
