Several Christmas markets are enforcing 2G rules meaning only those who are fully vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 will be admitted. Some markets are offering a mix of freely accessible and 2G areas. The markets remain charming despite the security and hygiene concepts, according to Hamburg Tourismus GmbH. This year, the focus will again be on the historic Christmas market outside Hamburg's City Hall (free access, 2G rules in the catering area), which will be open from November 22 to December 23, 2021.
The first Christmas markets in Hamburg including the Santa Pauli on St. Pauli are reopening in mid-November after the pandemic forced their closure last year. Other Christmas markets will open in the next days offering showmen and women, who have been badly hit by the pandemic, a ray of hope. Retail in Hamburg also stands to benefit from the increased footfall from near and far.
