"The free use of public spaces is an effective, helpful means of supporting caterers and exhibitors in the corona era and facilitates socially-distanced, outdoor catering," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport. The response to outdoor catering in Hamburg has been good as restrictions eased. The extended aid would guarantee diverse, outdoor catering in future, according to Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Districts.
Use of outdoor public spaces free of charge until late 2022
Caterers and exhibitors can now use public outdoor spaces free of charge after the senate waived fees through late 2022. The scheme is being extended to events during the "Summer of Culture" and to those funded by the "New Start Fund for Cities and Centres (Neustartfonds)".

Millions in aid
The fee waiver has already helped many restaurateurs and exhibitors, according to Andreas Dressel, Senator for Finance. Coupled with the reduced value-added tax rate for the catering trade, this would bring aid to the high double-digit million range. Business that do not benefit from the current aid could receive e.g. deferrals or partial waivers of fees until late 2021 at least.
