Stage Entertainment to host musical premiere of cult movie in spring 2026

Stage Entertainment is gearing up to host the premiere of "Back to the Future - The Musical " next spring. The legendary journey through time with the world-famous DeLorean coupé will go live in the Stage Operettenhaus on the Reeperbahn. Hopes are now high that the musical will reignite the cult of the (1985) box-office hit "Back to the Future".

"Back to the Future" as a spectacular live experience

“We are bringing one of the greatest cult films of all time to Germany as a spectacular live experience as ‘Back to the Future - The Musical’,” said Uschi Neuss, Managing Director of Stage Entertainment Germany. "This show combines impressive special effects, rousing music and a timeless story that will delight fans of the film just as much as audiences experiencing the adventure of Marty McFly and Doc Brown for the first time." The musical is coming to Hamburg after its world premiere in Manchester in 2020 and its London premiere in 2021. Audiences can watch the protagonists race across the stage at 140 km/h through a thunderstorm and a narrow escape to break the time-space continuum. The musical was written by Bob Gale, who also wrote the film trilogy, and features new music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, who have both won Emmy and Grammy awards.

Musicals as an economic factor for Hamburg

Earlier this year, the New York Times listed Hamburg as one of the world's most exciting destinations in its "52 Places to Go" feature. Musicals are now a key economic factor for Hamburg as a vibrant cultural centre. Musicals attract around two million visitors every year, more than the city's population. These visitors spent around EUR 1.01 billion on hotels and other activities in the city, an audience survey by Stage Entertainment in 2022 found.  Hamburg is now the third most important city worldwide for musicals. On the occasion of the Hercules world premiere in Hamburg, Thomas Suchmacher, President of the Disney Theatrical Group, told NDR broadcasting: "This is one of the world's biggest musical cities. There's New York and London - and then there's Hamburg."
