"This success shows that Hamburg inspires us and the world," said Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Marketing GmbH. The company and the German National Tourist Board in New York had successfully presented the city as a "modern, sustainable and innovative metropolis" in the New York Times pitch. Alongside world-famous destinations such as the Dolomites in Italy and New York City's museums, Hamburg is the only German destination recommended by the NYT. "This list inspires millions of travellers worldwide - and Hamburg is one of the top destinations again this year," Strittmatter emphasised.
Hamburg is one of the "52 Places to go" in 2025, according to the New York Times (NYT), which has selected the world's most exciting destinations for two decades. The newspaper has highlighted Hamburg's unique combination of history and modernity as exemplified by the flak tower which opened in 2024.
Hamburg only German city in list
City now magnetic cultural centre
Hamburg was among the NYT's recommended destination in 2017. At the time, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and the port landscape were the main attractions. This year, new highlights and traditional cultural venues have been added to the list. The historic bunker, which is now a green oasis after extensive modernisation and houses the Reverb by Hardrock Hamburg Hotel, is the city's latest flagship. The NYT has also highlighted the upcoming opening of the digital art museum "TeamLab Borderless" and the Conrad Hotel, which will add to cultural offers in the city.
