Hamburg-based intralogistics company expands headquarters with "Centre of Competence Mechatronics"

Still and Mercurius Industrial Properties broke ground Wednesday (February 19, 2025) for the "Centre of Competence Mechatronics" in Billbrook with Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics. The Hamburg-based intralogistics expert seeks to solidify its position in energy systems and produce its own lithium-ion batteries in Hamburg from 2026. Plans are being laid to develop more sites in the city.

Innovation platform for entire mechatronics sector

"We are creating a unique innovation platform for the entire mechatronics sector via our 'Centre of Competence Mechatronics'," said Florian Heydenreich, Managing Director of Still. "It stands for innovative strength, technological excellence, efficiency and highly attractive, future-proof jobs in Hamburg." The  new building will enable the provider of internal logistics solutions to expand its mechatronics area from 5,900 to 10,800 square metres at a cost of EUR 50 million. The building in Hamburg-Billbrook is due for completion in early 2026. Around 140 employees will begin working there in mid 2026 with sufficient space for production lines, test areas and development laboratories. The space freed up at Still's headquarters will be used to expand the training workshop.

Developing an energy competence centre

"Hamburg is and will remain Still's headquarters and an important innovation centre," said Heydenreich. The plans foresee more investments in Hamburg and developing the site into a centre of excellence for energy. To this end, Still is expanding its production of innovative drive systems and plans to produce its own lithium-ion batteries from 2026. "After opening our production plant for fuel cell systems in 2023, the next logical step is to build up further expertise and bundle resources in pioneering energy systems," he added.

Alexander Yauschew, Managing Director of Mercurius Industrial Properties, the investor and ow owner of the property, stressed the importance of smooth procedures, flexible structures and the resulting approval processes for corresponding projects. Yauschew thanked Ralf Neubauer,  District Manager of Hamburg-Mitte, and Georg Seeck, Key Account Manager Industry and District Manager at Hamburg Invest, for their support.
