The Economic Development Agency in the district of Harburg (WLH) has launched the "Smart Factory 5G+" innovation network to bring partners in industry and science and industry together with SMEs. Production methods and systems are to be developed based on 5G mobile technology and real-time data communication. Hopes are now high that this can lead to more efficiency, flexibility and sustainability.

Smart Factory 5G+ to boost competitiveness

"As part of Smart Factory 5G+, we are working on customised solutions that will secure the long-term competitiveness of local companies and strengthen the innovative power of the entire business region," said Jens Wrede, Managing Director of WLH. The network, which is funded by the Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, supports the integration of 5G technology into production processes to promote Industry 4.0. WLH provides a test and development platform for this with the modern 5G real-world laboratory in the TIP Innovationspark Nordheide. The lab brings together SMEs’ operational innovations with applied research. In Buchholz, innovative approaches can be tested in real conditions. The 13 partners in the innovation network include eight SMEs and universities in the Hamburg and Bremen-Oldenburg Metropolitan Regions such as the Private University of Applied Sciences (PHWT) and Leuphana University Lüneburg. The network is managed by the high-tech company Embeteco in Rastede and WLH.

Customised infrastructure in TIP Nordheide's 5G real-world lab

"The combined use of 5G technology and AI, robotics and the Internet of Things has all sorts of benefits for manufacturers such as real-time monitoring and control of production, rapid response to changes or reducing operating costs while increasing the flexibility of production lines," said Timo Maurer, Innovation Manager at WLH. Wrede is encouraging companies throughout Harburg and the Hamburg Metropolitan Region to join the network. "We are home to Germany's largest real-world 5G laboratory. Our region offers tailor-made infrastructure and ideal conditions for developing new technologies and promoting their practical application," said Wrede, adding, "This infrastructure is open to all SMEs." The free “5G Technology in Companies” forum on February 27, 2025 in Buchholz's ISI Centre for Startups, Business and Innovation will highlight the benefits and opportunities of the new technology. Registrations are now possible online via the WLH Business Development Centre.
