Geesthacht/Lauenburg: The Helmholtz Centre Hereon's new research vessel is about to set sail. The Coriolis is a floating laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment for coastal and climate research. Built by the Hitzler shipyard in Lauenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, the ship's propulsion system is considered particularly environment-friendly thanks to hydrogen-generated electricity. The EUR 18 million Coriolis was funded mainly by the German Ministry of Education and first test runs will get underway soon. Research is set to focus on nutrient and pollutant transport between the rivers and coasts in the North and Baltic Seas as well as the effects of offshore wind power on the environment.
Ahrensburg/Lübeck: Two companies based in Schleswig-Holstein are leading the way when it comes to sustainability. Boomerang Systems in Ahrensburg recently won the German Sustainability Award for its reusable shipping packaging. Their boxes are made from recycled plastic and can be reused several times thanks to a deposit system. The producer-consumer co-operative Landwege in Lübeck sells organic food from member farms in its five shops. The idea won the German Sustainability Award, which encourages a shift towards more sustainability.
Research project to secure skilled labour
Lüneburg: How will AI impact jobs in future? How can companies retain urgently-needed skilled labourers? And how can working models become as flexible as possible? Leuphana University in Lower Saxony is researching these and many other skilled labour issues. As part of the new "Job Lab", scientists, companies and skilled workers are working jointly on job profiles. More information about the "Job Lab" will be available during a kick-off event on January 21, 2025. Simply click on the Leuphana University website.
Voluntary craft year
Lübeck: Many trades like plumbing and heating, carpentry, catering or boat building are struggling to find talented professionals. The Lübeck Chamber of Skilled Crafts' Voluntary Year of Trades is one of many good ideas tackling this situation. Over the course of a year, young people complete work placements in four different trades. Participating companies in Schleswig-Holstein can stir up enthusiasm for their work and, ideally, find new young trainees. The Lübeck Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Small Businesses will be holding an online information event on January 17, 2025 to answer all questions about the voluntary year - from application to insurance and remuneration.
Funding scheme for digital mobility
Hanover: Digitalisation is prompting a rethink of transport, for instance through intelligent route planning, networked transport systems and new aircraft. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics has announced a new funding scheme to boost digital innovation in mobility, targeting SMEs and startups in the state, as well as collaborative projects with research institutions. The scheme focuses on all modes of transport, including road, rail, water and aviation. A webinar on January 22, 2025 will provide background information. Applications can be submitted until the deadline of March 31, 2025.
