Awards, investments and innovations across metropolitan region - from Fehmarn to Soltau, Cuxhaven to Schwerin

Lübeck: AI can be used to research grants, summarize meetings, or translate manuals. However, companies often have individual needs. SMEs can design tailor-made AI applications  with developers and designers during the Hanseatic Hackathon (November 14-15, 2025) in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein. Companies can enter their specific problems, and a jury makes the selection. Then, everyone will put their heads together to come up with solutions. Applications are being accepted until the deadline of September 26. The hackathon is organized by the Hanse Innovation Campus Lübeck and is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research.

Sukow’s latest supermarket features regional products

Sukow: A new supermarket recently opened in Sukow, a village of 1,500 people around 20 kilometres from Schwerin, at a cost of €540,000 with €150,000 from the state. The opening is part of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania’s “The New Village Centre“ scheme to ensure that villages remain lively. The new shop sells mostly regional products and, of course, a friendly chat is always to be had as well.

New industrial estates in Hamburg Metropolitan Region

Luneburg/Itzehoe/Büchen: Are you looking for office space for your business in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region? New opportunities are emerging in the south-east of Luneburg in Lower Saxony. There, the 34-hectare Bilmer Berg II industrial estate is being built with a network of footpaths and cycle paths. Meanwhile, the investor Frasers Property Industrial has taken over the site of the former Gruner/Prinovis printing works in Itzehoe, Schleswig-Holstein. Plans are being laid for a commercial industrial estate to house logistics, production, trade and light industry. East of Hamburg, the ground-breaking ceremony for the sustainable Steinkrüger Koppel industrial estate has just taken place in Büchen.

Awards for stars of startup scene and founders

Stade/Lübeck: Applications for the Gründerstar competition in the Stade region are being accepted until the deadline of August 15, 2025. The competition honours fledgling companies as well as social enterprises in the region. Meanwhille, students, employees and graduates of the University of Lübeck, the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus can apply for the Lübeck Founder Award. Applications are being accepted until the deadline of September 15, 2025.

Geesthacht Innovation and Technology Centre (GITZ) marks 25th anniversary

Geesthacht: The Geesthacht Innovation and Technology Centre (GITZ) recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. The GITZ is the main innovation hub in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Located near the Helmholtz Centre Hereon, it offers startups and young companies 10,000 square metres of space. Offices, laboratories, production areas and workshops are also available. In addition to providing excellent facilities, the GITZ has a proud history: Alfred Nobel developed dynamite in the city of Schleswig-Holstein in 1866.
