Awards for novel cabin interiors to be presented in April

Hamburg Aviation has announced the shortlist of the prestigious Crystal Cabin Award 2025 with more than 50 entries in seven categories. The winners of the annual cabin interiors award in the categories of 'Accessibility', 'Cabin Technologies', 'IFEC & Digital Services', 'Passenger Comfort', 'Sustainable Cabin', 'University' and the 'Judge's Choice Airline Innovation' will be announced on April 8, 2025 during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

More individual, comfortable and sustainable cabins

A clear trend towards more personalised, comfortable, sustainable and functional cabins is emerging this year. Cathay Pacific's “Aria Suite”, for instance, allows passengers to control lighting, seating position and crew communications in a synchronised system. Integrated technology is also set to improve cabin functionality, as seen in UNIO by Design Investment and Healthy Motion Seating from Comfort Motion Global (CMG) and Thompson Aero Seating. UNIO is designed like a desk lamp and consolidates several Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) thereby simplifying seat manufacturing and maintenance.

Many of the entries in the “Sustainable Cabin” category focus on recycling and resource conservation, as well as waste reduction and energy efficient technologies. Krüger Aviation's innovative recycled polycarbonate, developed in collaboration with Green Mobility Interior and Airbus, is made entirely from production waste. Recycled materials are also being used in textiles and surfaces such as the Mohawk Group's EcoFlex InFlight" carpet system. Meanwhile, Boeing, Adient Aerospace, Botany Weaving and LanzaTech are developing seating fabrics made from CO2 waste.

Accessibility and technological innovations

The "Accessibility" category highligts approaches for barrier-free air travel. FlightPath3D’s Accessibility Map is a user-friendly, high-contrast map for passengers with visual, motor, cognitive or auditory impairments. The map helps them find their way around the cabin. The "Prime+ Cabin Platform System" by Collins Aerospace eases travelling in a wheelchair while the "Single Aisle Lavatory Door 1" by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) in collaboration with Diehl Aviation makes it easier to use toilets in small cabins. UDIT's R.A.I.S.S (Restroom Autonomous In-flight Sanitising System) brings in-flight restroom hygiene to new level thanks to an autonomous robot that cleans the floor after each use.

In the "Cabin Technologies" category, the "Ultra-lightweight Display System" by Tongji University was presented as an alternative to screens. Using small projectors, it reduces the weight and space requirements of conventional entertainment systems. An jury of 28 experts will select three finalists in each category. The awards will be presented during a gala dinner at the Grand Elysée Hotel in Hamburg on April 8, 2025.
