"We are delighted to welcome more holidaymakers to Hamburg Airport at the start of the summer holidays after a very quiet months caused by corona. Our team is well prepared even though it is still comparatively quiet," said Katja Bromm, Press Officer at Hamburg Airport. "Although demand and flight availability are increasing week by week, we are still in a good position to meet demand. However, air traffic is still at a very low level.”
Over 350 aircraft at airport in first five days
Several airlines at Hamburg Airport have resumed connections to popular destinations in Spain, Greece, Croatia and Italy after travel restrictions in Europe have been eased in the wake of coronavirus. More than 5,000 arriving and departing passengers per day and 70 to 80 take-offs and landings are expected at Hamburg Airport at the start of holidays in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Rising demand for flights
Over 70 destinations this summer
Rising demand has prompted several airlines to expand their routes. Hamburg Airport is expecting a 75 per cent increase in the number of flights on offer by mid-July and expects to serve over 70 destinations compared to 40 at present including Majorca, Ibiza, Gran Canaria and Crete, Split and Rjieka in Croatia, and various destinations in Austria, Italy, Portugal and Turkey.
Package of measures to ensure safe travel
Hamburg Airport has put a package of measures in place to ensure safe travel - from check-in to boarding - to comply with the latest recommendations on preventing infections. Masks are mandatory and must also be worn in all terminals. The airport has posted a list of FAQs in reference to coronavirus on its website to ensure that passengers and visitors are well informed before they arrive at the airport.
