Last autumn, around EUR 1.5 million in funds were made available nd were swiftly exhausted. Around 800 people had registered for the grant within 20 minutes. Applications for funds are longer being accepted. Commenting on the latest success, Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment, said:"Cargo bikes are climate-friendly and are an important part of the transport transition especially in a city with over a million inhabitants. The market offers even more exciting and practical models. Households with cargo bikes will find it much much easier to do without their own car."
People whose main residence is Hamburg are eligible for the grant regardless of status i.e. individuals, household, an association, trades people, self-employed persons or companies. Those interested must apply for the grant before purchasing a cargo bike. Around 33 per cent of the purchase price has been subsidised.
