A total of 1,546 new start-ups were set up in QI of 2024. This indicates a stable start-up dynamic throughout the first half of the year. Another 1,366 new start-ups were added in QII. At the same time, the number of business closures rose by 15 per cent to 1,467. Despite the increased number of closures, the balance of new start-ups and closures remained positive with 1,445 more businesses founded.
Statistics North publishes figures for first half of 2024
A record 2,912 new companies were founded across Hamburg in the first six months of this year – a rise of 2 per cent over the same period in 2023, and is also the highest half-year figure since statistics in this sector began in 2008, according to the Statistical Office North.

The rising number of start-ups indicates Hamburg's attractiveness as a business location for entrepreneurs. On average, 1.5 companies were founded per 1,000 inhabitants in Hamburg. More start-ups were set up in Hamburg-Mitte with a rate of 3.6 compared to 0.8 start-ups per 1,000 inhabitants in the districts of Harburg, Wandsbek and Bergedorf. The development in Hamburg-Nord is particularly remarkable with a 72 per cent increase in start-ups over 2023.
