HVV announces plans for safer public transport in 2025

Technical innovations, help hotline and more staff to improve safety on S-Bahn

Hamburger Hochbahn (HVV) and S-Bahn Hamburg announced plans Wednesday (December 11, 2024) for automatic pattern recognition in video analyses and a WhatsApp hotline for passengers in need of assistance. Artificial intelligence will also play a key role in improving safety. Security staff will be increased by around 80 employees to 750 in 2025. Hopes are now high that the measures will lead to safer public transport next year.

HVV relying on AI

"We want to ensure safer public transport with more staff and technology," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport. Hochbahn also hopes to launch a pilot project for AI-supported pattern recognition in video surveillances to identify safety-critical situations swiftly. In the first quarter of 2025, S-Bahn Hamburg will begin testing an AI system that analyses weather, capacity utilisation, timetable and operating status data in real time. Then, more security staff can be deployed to critical places, if necessary. The S-Bahn also plans to launch a new WhatsApp hotline for passengers who need help quickly.

"Safe travelling on HVV" for more transparency

The measures complement the existing HVV safety concept, which includes video surveillance and emergency telephones on platforms. The transport company launched its "Safe Travel on HVV" campaign in December to highlight the safety measures and give advice on what to do in an emergency.  Together with a recently introduced ban on weapons on public transport, these measures should further increase passengers' sense of security.
