"Onshore power for ships in the Port of Hamburg stems from renewable sources. That avoids emissions. We are expanding the range of services significantly - land and onshore power are going hand in hand," said Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics. Similar agreements have already been reached with TUI Cruises, MSC Cruises and the Norwegian Cruise Line. HPA will put onshore power plants in the Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH), Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB), Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) and Cruise Center Steinwerder into operation by late 2023. That should cut greenhouse gas and emissions during handling and transport.

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have signed a letter of intent securing the onshore supply of electricity for MSC's container ships in the Port of Hamburg. An agreement will be drawn up by late September 2023.

"After signing a Memorandum of Understanding with MSC Cruises on the use of onshore electricity in the Port of Hamburg in June, I am delighted that MSC now wants to help make shipping and port operations more ecological," said Friedrich Stuhrmann, CCO of HPA. Sören Töft, CEO of MSC, welcomed this latest measure, and remarked: "This will allow us to work closely on the introduction of onshore electricity supply and take joint steps towards decarbonizing the global logistics value chain." Leonhard added: "The fact that MSC, as one of the world's largest container shipping companies, is moving forward with us on this project adds even more momentum."
