Hamburg's digital shipping register getting bigger

8,000 ships and counting in Germany's biggest register - Rhineland-Palatinate joins

Around 8,000 ships are now listed in the ever-growing digital ship register after Rhineland-Palatinate transferred its register to Hamburg on February 1, 2024. Berlin, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg and parts of Hesse had previously transferred their data to the register managed by Hamburg's district court.

"The register boosts Hamburg as a legal and business centre. Secondly, we are using a state-of-the-art digital register that has been developed by a state," said Anna Gallina, Senator for Justice. Around 850 ships and ships are under construction in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Digitalisation to reduce bureaucracy

Prior to digitalisation, entries and changes were done on paper which was cumbersome and expensive. Digitalisation was launched as an IT project in 2018. The digital shipping register is easier to manage and allows companies and citizens to apply for printouts online.
