Hamburg to pioneer hydrogen expansion

"Green hydrogen is key to achieving climate targets. We want to develop Hamburg into one of the most important distribution centres for green hydrogen and its derivatives in Europe," said Melanie Leonhard,  Senator for Economics. That offers Hamburg a great opportunity as a business centre and to pioneer expanded hydrogen infrastructure. "In the coming years, we will also consistently exploit and expand the metropolitan region's potential for the production and use of green hydrogen," she added. More than 60 projects along the entire value chain should advance the development of a marketable green hydrogen economic sector in the metropolitan region.

Hydrogen economic sector -  from generation to use

"Our goal is to support the path to climate neutrality with all the means at our disposal. We already have a strong green hydrogen network in the city and continue to attract companies to Hamburg that are developing sustainable solutions to the present global challenges with innovative technologies," said Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. Various companies and research institutions are working jointly on decarbonizing industry. The projects range from electrolysis and the creation of a hydrogen industrial network to use in the chemical and aviation industries. The Port of Hamburg is to be expanded for the import and export of hydrogen.

Hamburg's potential upheld

A study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has revealed that the Hamburg Metropolitan Region is particularly suitable for a green hydrogen economic sector. Hamburg also offers great conditions for start-ups and investments and it was recently named one of the most promising cities of the future after topping the "Larger Cities" category in a survey conducted by FDI Intelligence, a subsidiary of the Financial Times Group,
