Hamburg International Music Festival to give musical glimpse of future

The Elbphilharmonie is gearing up to host the 2025 Hamburg International Music Festival from May 1 to June 5, 2025 under the theme of future. The agenda features top orchestras from Vienna, Munich, Rome, London, Budapest and Chicago as well as important contemporary artists.

Festival agenda

Guests include soloists such as Lisa Batiashvili, Janine Jansen, Camilla Nylund, Joshua Bell, Sol Gabetta, Igor Levit, Daniil Trifonov, Mitsuko Uchida, Seong-Jin Cho and Sir András Schiff. The U.S. composer, John Luther Adams, will present his orchestral work "Become Ocean" while and composer Philip Glass's ensemble will perform the soundtrack to the film "Koyaanisqatsi", which is critical of civilisation. The visionary music of composer, conductor and cultural networker Pierre Boulez will also take centre stage. Music from overseas will come to Hamburg in the form of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and its "Great Black Music - Ancient of the Future". Australian pianist and composer, Zubin Kanga, will make a guest appearance at the Elbphilharmonie as part of a programme focusing on artificial intelligence.. The Brazilian youth orchestra of Bahia "Neojiba" will give a glimpse of the future of classical music. Hungarian conductor and composer Iván Fischer will conduct the Budapest Festival Orchestra's performance of Gustav Mahler's "Resurrection Symphony" and the U.S. conductor, Alan Gilbert, will bring Alban Berg's opera "Wozzeck" to the stage.

Music key location factor 

Music is a key location factor for Hamburg and the city is now a leading music centre after New York and London. The Reeperbahn Festival has morphed into Europe's largest club festival and an international platform for the music industry. Meanwhile, the Elbphilharmonie which opened in 2017, the Elbphilharmonie concert clocked up 841,000 visitors in the 2022/23 concert season. The Hamburg International Music Festival is organised jointly by the Hamburg Musik, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Ensemble Resonanz, Konzertdirektion Rudolf Goette, NDR Vokalensemble, NDR das neue werk, Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble and Kampnagel.
