Hamburg to host "Day of German Unity" celebrations this year

City reveals plans for "Day of German Unity" and "Night of Unity" celebrations

The Inner Lake Alster, City Hall and Gänsemarkt as well as Moenckebergstrasse will become a festivity mile when Hamburg hosts "German Unity Day" celebrations from October 2- 3, 2023. A first "Night of Unity" will also be held on the evening of October 2. The festival is being held under the theme of "Opening Horizons" similar to the theme behind Hamburg's presidency of the German Bundesrat this year.

Emphasis on "modern, diverse and open Germany"

"Several hundred thousand people are expected to visit our city on both days. Hamburg wants to use its role as host to show a modern, diverse and open Germany in the heart of Europe," said Michael Otremba, Managing Director of Hamburg Tourism. This "Opening Horizons"-themed festival features lots of entertainment, hands-on activities and information. The idea is to make politics and forward-looking ideas more tangible for the public. The mile along Moenckebergestrasse, for instance, showcases the German states. Visitors can literally take a tour of Germany without leaving Hamburg and discover the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Alps and the Rhine and Oder regions.

Four constitutional bodies will provide information on their work in the service of democracy in the courtyard of City Hall  on Rathausmarkt and in the Chamber of Commerce. The Young Future Lab on Gänsemarkt will become a forward-looking workshop, think tank and hotspot for all those keen on shaping the environment and politics in future. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region will highlight its diversity at Reesendamm Bridge. Various associations and institutions will be presented between Ballindamm, Alstertor and Europapassage. Along the Blue Light Mile between Adolphsplatz and Rathausmarkt, the German Federal Armed Forces, fire brigades, police, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and various relief organisations will give insight into their work.

Sustainability projects, initiatives, music and culture

The topic of sustainability is high on the agenda of this year's festival. Along the Neuer Jungfernstieg, institutions, associations and companies will showcase their sustainability projects, educate people about the U.N.'s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and making for a tangible experience. The interactive art exhibition "Art for Trees and Eco Nation" with a recycling app is likely to offer plenty of food for thought. Live ideas and initiatives will give visitors a glimpse of the digital economy. Fun and games for all generations will be offered near Petrikirche, Speersort and Colonnaden. Music and culture will be on show during the Night of Unity at the Inner Lake Alster and beyond. Live entertainment will also be provided on the NDR Alsterbühne. Admission to all events is free.
