"KERN" project to make local government services digital, user-friendly and accessible

The "KERN" project run by Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein has won the Good Governance Award 2024, a press release said Friday (November 8, 2024). The aim is to develop a flexible modular system for digital administrative processes and an open UX (user experience) standard.

Focus on user-friendliness and accessibility

"The recognition of the Good Governance Award shows that digitisation works best when jointly developed solutions create real added value for citizens," said Jan Pörksen, State Councillor and Head of the Hamburg State Chancellery. The project impressed the jury with its user-friendly and barrier-free design of digital services. The technology-independent, open-source design system, designed as a tool kit for digital administrative solutions, will be made available to all 16 German states, local government and IT service providers. It will be  continuously developed by a nationwide interdisciplinary community of experts along the lines of  "public money - public code".

Sustainable digital solutions for better public services

Every year, the Public Service Lab, Studiovorort and the Berlin University of Applied Sciences honour innovative projects that use sustainable digital solutions to improve the quality and accessibility of government services. "KERN creates a solid foundation that will enable us to build the digital state of the future together," said Dirk Schrödter, Head of the State Chancellery in Schleswig-Holstein. The award highlights the pioneering digital transformation of local government.
