"The new building and the expanded capacities will strengthen the worldwide leading position of the University Heart and Vascular Centre," said Fegebank. "We are building for our future and for that of cardiovascular medicine, the campus and thus for Hamburg's future. But above all, we are building for the best possible care of our patients," said Prof. Dr. Burkhard Göke, Medical Director and Chairman of the UKE Board of Management.
Construction of a new 388-bed cardiovascular centre is underway at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) after the foundation stone was laid during a ceremony attended by Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality, a press release said Thursday (September 10, 2020. The six-storey building is expected to be ready in 2023 at a cost of some EUR 200 million, UKE said. The project is part of UKE's Future Plan 2050, which foresees ten new buildings and extensions over the next 30 years.

The state of the art building will house up to 388 beds, nine operating theatres, nine cardiac catheter laboratories and underground parking on over 72,000 square metres of space. Four instead of two hybrid operating theatres will be available for complex surgery e.g. on the aorta. A new "Cardiovascular Imaging Centre" is also being built. The costs will be footed via the tenant-tenant model practised in the city. The Klinik Facility-Management Eppendorf (KFE), a subsidiary of UKE, will construct the buildings on behalf of a property management company or so-called realisation agent. The company leases to a user, i.e. UKE, which in turn receives a subsidy from the city for the rent.
