Anyone who lives, works, attends university or a college or is a member of club in Hamburg can take part. Every kilometre cycled will be counted. Those interested can join a team on https://www.city-cycling.org/hamburg or set up their own. Cyclists can also set up sub-teams within their team, e.g., for a department in a company, to make the competition even more exciting.
Hamburg is taking part in the fourth Germany-wide competition for the most cycled kilometres and targeting two million kilometres this year. More than 400 teams had registered by August 13, 2021. All over Hamburg, people are urged to cycle as much as possible between September 1-21, 2021.
Cycling to work
Together and healthier to the destination
Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture, who is also a keen cyclist, remarked: "We will all be pedalling for a new Hamburg kilometre record, for our health and to protect the climate. This competition is doubly and triply good. The way to work, to sports, to friends - every kilometre covered counts. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, added: "City cycling is a great thing. It motivates entire workforces to switch to cycling, and many then discover that the commute to work by bike is much nicer than previously thought."
International campaign
Last year, Hamburg set a new record with 1.77 million kilometres cycled - half a million more than in 2019. Around 8,519 cyclists in 592 teams registered in 2020. "Stadtradeln - Radeln für ein gutes Klima" (Cycling for a Good Climate) is an international campaign initiated by the Climate Alliance, which is the largest network of cities, towns and districts striving to protect the world's climate. It counts some 1,700 members in 26 European countries. Hamburg has been a member of the alliance since 1992. Cities, districts, regions and towns, teams and individuals compete against each other for the most kilometres cycled. The current status of all registered towns in Germany (and Luxembourg as well as one town in Alsace) can be found on https://www.city-cycling.org/results.
