EUR 2 million in funding for digitalisation at Hamburg's universities

"The experience of the past few months has shown us that we have to shape digitalisation actively and with commitment to benefit students," said Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality. The research-oriented Open T-Shape scheme highlights one of Hamburg's great strengths as a centre of science, she added. Digital learning offers, based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and prepared by TU Hamburg and HafenCity University, will be made freely accessible on the Hamburg Open Online University.

Andreas Timm-Giel, President of the Hamburg University of Technology, remarked: "The Open T-Shape project offers students an opportunity to think outside the box and work towards a sustainable future." A TU research project involving the cultivation of algae useing an microalgae reactor will also be presented. The harvested algae are to be used as sustainable and healthy feed for fish in aquacultures and will provide bio-based pigments for the food industry.

Three other projects in Hamburg will also benefit from the funding, provided by the foundation, to boost long-term, forward-looking projects at German universities. This comes after the pandemic forced many universities to adjust their courses and teaching and to expand digital infrastructure at short notice.
