Cross Innovation Lab 2021 focusing on climate neutrality

Hamburg News presents seven interdisciplinary teams and their solutions for businesses

Egbert Rühl, Managing Director of Hamburg Kreativgesellschaft, has expressed satisfaction with the recently-ended 4th Cross Innovation Lab. "Twenty-seven creative professionals, 22 companies and organizations tackled seven challenges with nine scientists." The organisers, Hamburg Kreativgesellschaft, were initially unsure whether enough interested parties would even attend this year's event. "The keen interest really surprised and pleased us," said Rühl.

During the Cross Innovation Lab, interdisciplinary teams develop sustainable products and services over several months. Launched in February with designxport, Science Scout, IKS Hamburg and IFB Hamburg, this year’s event focused on climate neutrality. Hamburg News showcases seven teams and their innovation projects presented at the closing ceremony on June 7, 2021.

Mobility Team - moving culture

A huge proportion of global emissions can be traced back to big cities and especially transport, which is the  starting point for the Mobility Team consisting of Hamburger Hochbahn, Hamburger Verkehrsverbund, LSBG, BVM and hySolutions. The team is aiming for a positive experience of a new mobility culture that develops a real pull effect and boosts the mobility transition that Hamburg is vigorously pursuing. To this end, the team has devised an exciting storytelling approach that uses game principles and location competitions to generate new ideas on how redesigned plots of land, for instance, can lead to added value in the suburbs.

Aviation Team - FAIRcraft

The pandemic has wreaked havoc in the aviation industry and it has come under increased criticism given the ongoing climate debate. Yet every crisis holds an opportunity. Fast forward to 2030 with the prevalent FAIRcraft standard. Only efficient aircraft that conserve resources are flown. Altran, Diehl Aviation, Ylipson GmbH, CompriseTec GmbH, Autoflug, Cradle2Cradle e.V. and Hamburg Aviation presented a short and medium-haul A320 which resembles a flying bus.

Passengers are no longer entertained and there is no catering. Textile seats are suspended between the ceiling and the floor instead of being anchored to the floor. Recyclable wall fixtures have been installed using a click system. All this reduces weight significantly and slashes CO2 emissions.

Haspa Team - green connect

The Haspa Team has come up with a digital climate calculator for companies. Users can draft a detailed climate profile in just a few minutes - the prerequisite for making changes. Then, Haspa puts the company in contact with experts in its Haspa Connect network to achieve the optimization potential determined by the climate calculator. Haspa Connect becomes Haspa Green Connect.

Construction Site Waste Management Team

What could sustainable building sites look like in future? Construction sites account for 75 million cubic metres of waste every year in Germany. Implenia AG and the service provider BCL have taken a holistic view of the situation and come up with the C@CL scheme for more effective, quieter, resource-efficient building sites with less traffic. Circularity@ConstructionLogistics involves stakeholders such as logistics companies, trades, various authorities and local residents, who can be brought on board through e.g., guided tours of construction sites. As part of a multi-chamber skip pilot project for sustainable waste transport, lorries are deployed with movable compartments that adapt to the waste. One multi-chamber skip journey could then replace four conventional journeys and save CO2, time, fuel and costs.

FIND - Urban Infrastructure Team

Hamburg Wasser and Stromnetz Hamburg have set up the FIND platform to facilitate intelligent, multiple land use. (The German acronym FIND consists of Flächen, Ideen, Netzwerk und Denken or plots of land, ideas, networking and thinking.) However, the common lack of space in urban areas poses a huge problem for companies like Hamburg Wasser, which is urgently looking for space to develop new, modern wells. Yet, landowners like Hamburg Wasser can make land available temporarily to e.g., beekeepers who need space for a busy colony. FIND brings together the right stakeholders making for a vibrant, sustainable use of land.

Rhenus Logistics Team - green tube

Employees at Rhenus Logistics presented their so-called green warehousing solutions as no "one-fits-all" is available for the globally-operating company's 65 warehouses in Europe. The international team devised a competition to reduce CO2 playfully. A warehouse sustainability dashboard shows options and progress. Complementary teamwork medals ensure that clever ideas are heeded, shared, discussed and developed throughout Rhenus to achieve real, transformative power.

Logistics Team - going green together

Not every company is keen on sharing data with rivals and will do their utmost to preserve their own competitive edge. However, reliable data is essential for developing intelligent means of reducing CO2 emissions. To come up with a successful strategy for tracking CO2 emissions in complex logistics supply chains, Team Logistics consisting of the Digital Hub Logistics Hamburg, Volkswagen Group Logistics, Shell and Tchibo rely on a non-profit organisation as mediator. CO2 analysis, data preparation, consulting and certification are handled by an independent, neutral institution committed to climate protection that enjoys the trust of the stakeholders involved.
