"The fact that holiday travellers in particular have returned so quickly after the pandemic highlights people's desire to travel and for mobility," says Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport. Around 80 per cent of passengers at Hamburg Airport were travelling for leisure. Business travellers, on the other hand, accounted for a good 20 per cent of passenger traffic. A total of 1.45 million passengers in October 2023 marked a new record since the pandemic. The expansion of the network by many direct flights to (new) destinations is among the key factors behind rising passenger numbers and gives travellers even more options in 2024. A total of 13.6 million passengers in 2023 corresponds to 78 per cent of the passenger volume in 2019 (17.3 million).
Aviation recovered in 2023 with over 13 million passengers
Demand for flights to and from Hamburg Airport remains on the upswing in the wake of the pandemic with a 22 per cent rise in passenger numbers in 2023 over 2022 to around 13.6 million. An aircraft load factor of 80 per cent has surpassed pre-crisis levels and the airport is expecting a slight rise in passenger numbers this year.

Prospects for 2024
Airlines in Hamburg Airport are relying increasingly on larger aircraft with higher passenger capacity. "Airlines are planning more efficiently and are now tailoring their services precisely to demand," said Kunsch. That makes for the best possible use of capacities and helps achieve the airport's ambitious climate targets. Around 14.3 million passengers (an increase of 5 per cent over 2023) are expected to use Hamburg Airport this year.
