The UAV took off shortly after 3:00 p.m. and reached a maximum altitude of 22 metres. The drone was equipped with a loading box (see photo) with a cargo the size of a Euro-pallet. After a smooth take-off, the unmanned electric payload drone transported the cargo to a DB Schenker cargo bike and landed there. The shipment was then transferred to the bike to complete the multimodal and all-electric "last mile" delivery.
The cargo drone should "make existing logistics processes more robust, efficient and sustainable", according to Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter. The flight demonstrated how drones can expand existing logistics infrastructure for land or sea transport, thereby creating new supply chains and transport routes, the partners said.
