Companies should encourage their employees beginning with the youngest to behave more sustainably, according to the Chamber of Commerce. Apprentices can be trained as energy scouts and to identify energy-saving potential within the company. Employees can also be trained to become sustainability management experts.
The Chamber of Commerce has come up with a range of services to help SMEs across Hamburg become more sustainable. Nearly all of the companies in Hamburg consist of SMEs. who account for almost 50 per cent of economic activity, according to study done by the OECD on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. Thus, SMEs consume a significant number of resources and are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike large corporations, they are frequently unable to bundle their sustainability efforts in a separate department.
Promoting employee behaviour
Environment-friendly mobility
The chamber also advises on how to fund the switch to environment-friendly electric vehicles. Member companies can also share information about their initiatives on the chamber's platforms, such as the “Energy and Environment Round Table”. The “Climate Protection Business Network” pursues a similar goal and offers introductory consultations, webinars and courses. Around 1,600 companies in the "Hamburg Environmental Partnership" have voluntarily vowed to boost environmental and climate protection in their companies.
