Rising passenger volumes from Hamburg Airport

29 August 2024
4 per cent rise over 2023 - summer holiday traffic expected to remain high in coming weeks

More than 2 million passengers departed from Hamburg Airport this summer - an increase of 4 per cent over 2023.  Flight movements rose by 1.5 per cent to 14,200 which has impacted aircraft capacity usage. Aircraft were particularly full at around 87 per cent over  84 per cent in 2023.

September and October strong travel months

"Most passengers took less than 15 minutes to go through security while our technical services such as Slot & Fly and the baggage machines were also very popular. On peak days, passengers checked in every third suitcase themselves. Simple, new hand scanners made this faster and more convenient," said Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. Business is not expected to become quieter at the end of the holidays. "September and October have become strong travel months at Hamburg Airport with consistently high capacity utilisation. Business travel also picks up again after the holidays."

Terminals open in early hours

Hamburg Airport will open its terminals at 3.15 a.m. until late October. The security checkpoint will also be staffed from 3.30 a.m., as will the Slot & Fly lane. Many airlines  will open their check-in counters earlier than usual and offer check-in the evening before. Hamburg Airport advises those travelling by car to use the convenient online reservation system.
