“We want to expand and improve the range of rental bicycles in Hamburg with StadtRAD 2.0. The new system is well suited for practical use in Hamburg. The expansion of the cycle path network will see the bicycle increasingly become an efficient means of transport that improves mobility for everyone in our city,” said Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg. Jürgen Gudd, CEO of Deutsche Bahn Connect, added: “On the first weekend (February 1-3, 2019), all Stadtrad Hamburg customers are invited to test our new bicycles free of charge. All rides on the new Stadtrad are free this weekend.”
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has won a tender issued by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and will continue to operate Stadtrad Hamburg 2.0 when it launches on Friday (February 1, 2019). Then, cargo bikes with electrical support will be offered for the first time in Germany. The total fleet is to grow to 4,500 bikes, 70 load pedelecs and 350 rental stations during the ten-year contract and will eventually cover urban areas all over Hamburg. The system will connect all suburban and underground railway stops as well as the district and local centres depending on demand.
Efficient means of transport
Standards for modern urban mobility
In addition to a low height, the new bike features a handlebar display, Shimano Nexus seven-speed gears, an adjustable saddle with height marking and a security lock for easy rental. From spring, Stadtrad Hamburg customers will be able to borrow 20 spacious cargo pedelecs capable of transporting e.g. crates of drinks or children.
