"We feel that our long-standing call for the development of an alternative import infrastructure to diversify Germany's natural gas supply sources has been endorsed," said Frank Schnabel, Managing Director of Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH. The signed memorandum has created facts to build the LNG terminal in a timely manner and "to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas, among other things", he stressed.

The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the Dutch gas transmission system operator Gasunie and RWE signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" in early March to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Brunsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein.

Opportunities for importing hydrogen
The terminal should secure the supply of natural gas in Germany and could open up opportunities to import environment-friendly hydrogen. Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced in late February the rapid construction of two LNG terminals in Brunsbüttel and Wilhelmshaven.
