Hamburg's debut at Paris Real Estate Week

New European forum for talks on urban innovation

Hamburg is debuting at the Paris Real Estate Week from September 14-17, 2020 where the main focus will be on liveable cities of the future and how public and private urban developers meet this challenge. The main themes are sustainability, transport, governance, economic development, planning and infrastructure – issues that have become even more palpable amid the corona crisis. The Paris Real Estate Week is a hybrid of trade fair, conference and online event, and emerged after MIPIM, which is normally held in Cannes every spring, was postponed.

"Hamburg stands for forward-looking places and industries. We are delighted to present this to an international audience in Paris at this new trade fair," said Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. Hamburg Invest is the one-stop agency for settlements and investments in the city and the business community’s main partner in all business development issues. Hamburg Invest is also responsible for developing and marketing the city's innovation parks.

Hamburg's future projects

HafenCity Hamburg GmbH and Hamburg Invest will represent Hamburg in Paris. "HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is responsible for HafenCity, Billebogen, Grasbrook and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, which constitute four major, future-orientated projects in Hamburg. They reflect the entire spectrum of complex, highly ambitious and co-operative urban development," said Prof. Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, CEO of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH.

Cities are responsible for solutions that meet the needs of the future e.g. developing large inner-city spaces as resource-efficiently as possible, resource-saving construction, climate-neutral energy supply and low-car and low-CO2 transport and making a socially just city a reality. HafenCity will be used to exemplify the main aspects of good urban development during the event in Paris. Strategies and solutions that have been developed over the past two decades have made HafenCity a "launching pad of sorts" for innovation, said Bruns-Berentelg. HafenCity Hamburg GmbH will present these strategies and solutions on an interactive 80-inch multi-touch table in the French capital.

Themes of innovation parks

Hamburg's innovation parks in Altona, Bergedorf, Harburg and Finkenwerder are in different stages of development and focus on diverse themes. The park in Finkenwerder, which has been in existence for several years, focuses on aviation and is currently being expanded. Bergedorf's Innovation Park, which is presently being designed, is set to focus on energy while nearly all the sites in the Harburg Innovation Park have been sold. Hamburg Invest is currently examining possibilities for expansion there. A fourth innovation park focusing on life sciences can be found in Altona.

Liveable, forward-looking places

"When developing and operating the parks, we always have the city's entire ecosystem in mind as well as economic development requirements. The parks are not classic industrial estates, but are to become lively urban districts with innovative, research-orientated start-ups and companies," said Strittmatter. "We value innovative, climate-neutral and resource-conserving development and construction on the sites. Our focus with other municipal companies, especially HafenCity Hamburg GmbH and IBA Hamburg on commercial properties will help secure and develop the city of Hamburg as a vibrant place to live in the future," he added.
