"The prototype funding helps founders and companies in Hamburg to position themselves successfully on the international market with undiminished growth potential and equally strong competition," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. Hamburg now counts among Europe’s key games development centres and boasts many established game companies and a vibrant developer scene.
Gamecity Hamburg is providing up to EUR 400,000 in grants for computer games developers as part of the Hamburg Prototype Funding. Founders, startups and SMEs can obtain up to EUR 80,000 to develop prototypes of digital games. The startup funds should help developers launch on the market and diversify computer games developed in Hamburg. The deadline for applications is May 17, 2021.
Huge growth potential
Funds for motion capturing and VR
In 2020, seven projects by up-and-coming developers received prototype funding. These include the action-adventure game "Out of Place" by Bagpack Games, which uses special motion capturing equipment to integrate motion sequences and virtual camera movements into the game even without a studio. Other funded projects e.g., "Stadtkinder" by Studio Monstrum use virtual reality or reinvent the Solitaire card game ("Soulitaire" by Beardshaker).
Application procedure
Those interested in this year's prototype funding can apply after prior consultation with Gamecity Hamburg, which is funded by the City of Hamburg, before the deadline of May 17. The awarding committee consists of representatives of the games industry, Gamecity Hamburg and the City of Hamburg. Recipients will be selected based on their application and subsequent pitch.
