Hamburg Airport wins Skytrax World Airport award and top rankings in several categories

Hamburg Airport has secured the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Award in the category "Best Regional Airports in Europe" for the sixth time, a press release said Wednesday (August 11, 2021). Silver and bronze went to two other German airports, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn. According to Skytrax, the term "Regional Airport" covers all airports that offer national and continental flights as well as individual intercontinental flights. Hamburg Airport also came 26th in "The World's Top 100 Airports 2021" putting it among the top 30. The Skytrax award is based on independent passenger surveys

Several awards for Hamburg Airport

Hamburg came second in the category "The World's Best Regional Airports 2021" after Chubu Centrair International Airport Nagoya (Japan). The same applies to the category "Best Airports 2021: 2-5 million passengers". Hamburg Airport reached this category for the first time as passenger numbers had shifted worldwide due to the pandemic. In 2019, Hamburg Airport had 17.3 million passengers, compared to only 4.56 million passengers in 2020.

"The Skytrax World Airport Award is special for two reasons. Firstly, the award is selected by the people we have put at the centre of everything we do - our passengers," said Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. "Secondly, the award shows that our passengers have confidence in us even in a pandemic." Last year, Skytrax awarded Hamburg Airport four stars in an independent rating using six criteria to examine the effectiveness of hygiene and security measures to combat COVID-19.

Skytrax is a British consultancy and has surveyed the quality of international airlines and airports since 1990. The Skytrax World Airport Awards evaluate customer services and facilities in over 500 airports worldwide.
