The festival is an "excellent example of how partying and having fun go perfectly with sustainability and climate protection", said Jens Kerstan, Hamburg's Minister for the Environment. The Futur 2 Festival's combination of "culture, sustainability and ecstasy" won over a 42-member jury consisting of cultural representatives and stakeholders in commerce and media. Two stages on which numerous artists entertain the audience with live music and DJ sets are at the heart of the festival. One stage is powered by visitors on bikes and the other by solar energy. The festival's energy, waste (avoidance) and recycling concept, as well as sanitation and catering offers are all based on sustainability.
The Futur 2 Festival, funded by the Ministry for the Environment, has scooped the European Cultural Brand Award 2020. The festival based entirely on self-sufficient energy sources triumphed in the category "European Award for Sustainability in the Cultural Market 2020". First held in 2018, the event attracted 5,000 festivalgoers initially and has been held in the Elbpark Entenwerder ever since. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of this year's fest.

Sustainability increasingly important at cultural events
"The fact that there is a category for sustainability at a cultural award shows that the topic is finally receiving the importance it deserves," said Björn Hansen, founder of the Futur 2 Festival. The European Cultural Brand Award honours European cultural projects for cultural policy stance, innovative programming, identity-based brand development and sustainability. Around 112 entries took part in this year's contest. Eight out of 25 shortlisted entries scooped awards.
Green events - guide to sustainable events
The Ministry for the Environment has drawn up a checklist for sustainable events in co-operation with the districts, other ministries and the Green Events Network, which represents stakeholders in the events sector. The checklist covers topics such as reducing waste by using reusable instead of disposable containers, dishwashers and deposit systems, creating incentives for environment-friendly travel e.g. by offering guarded bicycle parking, combined public transport tickets and e-shuttle services. Emphasis is also on generating energy at the venue using wind power, photovoltaics, energy-efficient gadgets for heating, cooling and lighting. The Futur 2 Festival is considered a pilot event.
