Traffic is presently averaging 50 per cent of 2019 levels, the airport said, with no sign of a return to pre-pandemic figures. "Yet, it gets very crowded at times during the autumn holidays, when departures for sunny destations mount," said Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. Flights to the Mediterranean holiday regions of Spain, Turkey and the Greek islands are in great demand. "For this reason, we are counting on passengers to bring a little more time, patience and understanding with them."
Hamburg Airport is expecting around 450,000 arriving and departing passengers during the mid-term break from October 4-17, 2021 making for the highest volume of passengers volume since the start of pandemic. Around 115 aircraft are expected to take off and land at the airport every day. Increased passenger numbers are expected particularly in the early mornings and at weekends.
Great demand for Mediterranean destinations
Air travel during mid-term break
Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure and to allow more time than usual. They are also advised to keep their travel documents, vaccination and test certificates handy and to take only one accompanying person with them into the terminals. Medical masks remain compulsory in the terminals and aboard aircraft. Extensive hygiene and cleaning measures as well as contactless and early check-ins should make travelling more relaxed. Terminals at Hamburg Airport will open at 3:30 am from October 7-11 and from October 14-18, 2021.
Rules for returning passengers
Returning passengers must meet Germany's entry rules. Travellers aged 12 and over must present a negative test, proof of vaccination or proof of recovery. Passengers arriving from a high-risk area, as designated by Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI), must fill out a digital entry questionnaire and are required to quarantine for ten-days on their return. However, that can be waived on presentation of proof of vaccination or convalescence. Quarantine can be ended after five days on presentation of a negative test.
