Allermöhe industrial and business area

In a ranking of the German logistics magazine “Logistik Heute”, Allermöhe is listed among the top 10 German freight centres and logistics business areas. In keeping with Allermöhe’s focus on logistics, the UNA company network is dedicated to industry-related issues in areas such as traffic, public transport, parking, and safety, while also addressing social issues such as childcare, catering, as well as education and training. The network is a joint venture of the district of Bergedorf, the WSB location marketing association and Logistics Initiative Hamburg.

On a 30,000 m² site at Rungedamm, DHL Express has created an operations and office building that comprises an area of 6,000 m². With an investment to the tune of €45 million, this is DHL’s largest investment in Germany to date. At the new DHL parcel centre in Allermöhe, about 295,000 parcels are processed daily, and in the run-up to Christmas, the company even records up to 500,000 shipments daily. The express shipments for national and international parcels – small packages, parcels and documents – are processed here using a fully automated sorting system that is designed for a mail volume of 6,000 units per hour. Vans are loaded and unloaded at the 90 gates of the three pick-up and delivery (PUD) fingers as well as another 20 gates at the hall building.

Offering ample opportunities for movement and play, the large green outdoor area of the Elbkinder day-care centre at Henriette-Herz-Ring allows children to roam around freely. The broad range of facilities available on the premises invites children to explore the world and acquire knowledge as they engage in different activities – either independently or with guidance. The childcare centre is open from 6 am to 6 pm daily, providing staff from Allermöhe-based companies with optimum conditions for childcare services close to their own workplace.

Since the early 2000s, numerous modern, high-performance logistics centres with sophisticated architecture and sustainable building equipment have been realised at the Allermöhe location. Since 2002, the travel market retailer Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG has been coordinating its logistics processes from here, and in 2008, the logistics centre of BUDNI Handels- und Service GmbH & Co. KG also found its new home in Allermöhe. The BUDNI facility comprises a built-up area of 14,395 m² including a storage area of about 50,000 m² with more than 20,000 pallet storage spaces and an automated picking warehouse, providing jobs for more than 200 people. In the same year, fashion retailer H & M Hennes und Mauritz B.V. & Co. KG opened the world’s largest distribution centre here for the sales regions of Germany, eastern Switzerland and Slovenia.

Situated in the quarter of Billwerder, the DUSS Terminal Hamburg was built in 1993. Since then, the terminal has served as an important interface for the transshipment of loading units between road and rail as well as in national and international interchange of goods trains. The Hamburg-Billwerder terminal links up various routes of transport operators from Southern Europe to Scandinavia, some of these with more than 20 single-destination trains per day. It is one of the most modern freight terminals in Europe. In 2012, a third crane runway was added to the terminal to increase the handling capacity. To provide the basis for future growth, the gantry cranes were fully renewed in 2021. Fast rail connections in all directions are ensured through easy access to the Hamburg-Berlin main line as well as Hamburg’s freight railway network. Conveniently located in the east of Hamburg, the terminal also has excellent connections to the municipal road network and the A1 motorway.

As a medium-sized company operating in the field of electro-technology, the Pfannenberg Group Holding GmbH offers innovative solutions around the world, wherever they may be necessary for protecting people, machines, and the environment. The product range includes components and system solutions in the field of control cabinet air conditioning as well as optical and acoustic warning and signalling devices. Customised solutions are one of the company’s strengths. In 2003, for instance, around 20,000 special Quadro flashing beacons were developed and installed to illuminate the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Today, they still light up the famous landmark in summer and winter as well as during stormy weather.

When, in 1975, IBAU Hamburg Ingenieurgesellschaft Industriebau mbH developed the original central cone silos, this was a major step towards modern silo and mixing technology for storing and retrieving powdery mineral bulk materials. Today, this innovative construction is used by all major manufacturers. IBAU Hamburg supports customers in implementing projects by developing and applying tailor-made systems and solutions. The company is in charge of global projects e.g. in the areas of plant design, engineering, airslide systems, bulk loading technology, pneumatic tube conveyor technology with screw pumps as well as mechanical mixers and mixing plants.

At the DHL parcel centre in Allermöhe, some 295,000 parcels are processed daily. In the pre-Christmas season, there are even up to 500,000 parcels being handled per day. Shipments that have passed through the centre by 9 pm are transported onwards the very same night. DHL Paket GmbH also uses the Hamburg location as an international parcel centre for the import and export of parcels from and to Scandinavian countries. In May 2022, DHL announced its plans to expand the parcel centre in Allermöhe by adding a new 8,700 m² sorting hall that is expected to increase the sorting capacity to 52,000 shipments per hour. Scheduled to be completed in late 2023, the new facility will feature 110 loading bays and is expected to create 370 new jobs.

Based in Versmold (North Rhine-Westphalia), Nagel-Group Logistics SE is one of the leading food logistics companies in Europe. Every day, this group of companies moves foodstuffs in all shipment sizes and temperature classes, ranging from frozen products and meat to dairy products and confectionery. Serving customers from industry and trade, Nagel-Group helps ensure that consumers find the right goods at the right time and in the right quality at the relevant point of sale. At Hans-Duncker-Strasse in the Bergedorf district of Hamburg, Nagel-Group has been operating on a 33,000 m² site since 2021, and the premises are now being expanded to more than 70,000 m². Logistics capacities will also double, with 19,000 pallet spaces available in the near future. Nagel-Group’s real estate team itself is in charge of managing this large-scale development project, and the first construction measures started in mid-2022. The commissioning of the various construction phases will take place in stages, and the building is currently scheduled to be completed in mid-2025.

H & M Hennes & Mauritz AB is a family of brands and companies. In 2008, the Swedish textile retailer opened its new, large-scale distribution centre at Rungedamm 38. The sales regions of Germany, eastern Switzerland and Slovenia are supplied from here. The property comprises a built-up area of around 78,000 m², with a gross floor area of approx. 117,000 m², which can be extended by a further 20,500 m² to a total of approx. 146,000 m² as the need arises. The distribution centre is divided into a three-storey production area of approx. 80,000 m², a high-bay warehouse with order preparation facilities of approx. 27,000 m² and an administration building with social areas and a large canteen.
