Hamburg to host ICANN 2023 with emphasis on future of internet

Over 2,500 delegates expected at conference in CCH next October

Hamburg has won a bid to host the 78th ICANN annual meeting with the ECO Association of the Internet Industry and Denic eG, the operator of the .de domain, at the Congress Center Hamburg (CCH) from October 21-26, 2023. The U.S. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organisation that co-ordinates domain names and IP addresses worldwide, ensures stable operations of the Domain Name System (DNS) for the internet.

Delegates from 120 countries expected

Organisers are expecting some 2,500 delegates from over 120 countries at ICANN which attracts researchers, representatives of technology companies as well as movers and shakers in commerce and political stakeholders. The agenda features panels, discussions, sessions and presentations reliability of the internet and strengthening the digital infrastructure, top-level domains and technical innovations.

Forward-looking event for Hamburg

"For the first time in over 20 years, after Berlin in 1999, we are bringing an ICANN conference to Germany,” said Oliver Süme, Chair of ECO. Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics, stressed the importance of the meeting in the refurbished CCH, and noted: "The conference is a great enhancement for the city as a centre of innovation and smart city.
