Urban Development Minister Dorothee Stapelfeldt will be representing the Hamburg Senate at the trade fair in person. Stapelfeldt will present Hamburg urban development projects to an international audience in Cannes: “As a large and vibrant city, Hamburg offers excellent prospects across all sectors of the national and international real estate industry,” the senator says. Hamburg leads the way in Germany in the housing sector, both with newbuild and in innovative projects and production methods, such as serial construction and the use of timber. There is also great dynamism in the commercial sector. “Whenever these two sectors merge, you can expect a particularly exciting outcome: By combining residential and commercial uses, Hamburg's major urban development projects will create entirely new districts: well connected well-equipped and embedded in existing structures, with space for thousands of homes and places of work.” Examples of the “city of tomorrow” are the new Grasbrook district and the Science City in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld.
Hamburg will from 15 to 18 March be showcasing itself with 22 companies at MIPIM in Cannes, one of the world’s largest real estate trade fairs. The joint Hamburg stand at the fair is being organized by the Hamburg Invest business promotion association. The real estate sector depends on personal contact, in the view of Rolf Strittmatter, chief executive of Hamburg Invest. “And that’s why the number of companies joining us on-site will be almost as high as in pre-pandemic times. In 2019, the stand included 25 exhibitors – and this year there will be an outstanding 22 exhibitors.”

Liveable City of the Future
HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is the largest single exhibitor at the joint Hamburg stand. It is responsible for the projects of the future HafenCity, Grasbrook, Billebogen and Science City. HafenCity Hamburg CEO Andreas Kleinau says: “The liveable city of the future can only be created when urban society, science and business collaborate closely. The key topics of the future – healthcare, new materials, climate and energy, mobility and digitisation – can only be moved forward together, and all of us have to take responsibility for this to happen.” Hamburg’s urban areas of the future are to be locations combining technical and social progress within the provisions of the regional innovation strategy. “How we would like, and be able, to live tomorrow will be decided here.” HafenCity has evolved into a benchmark for large innovation themes that will continue to be worked out in Grasbrook, Billebogen and the Science City.
