University expands Bachelor of Science course in nursing

Graduates of the Hamburg University of Applied Science's (HAW) Bachelor of Science course in nursing will soon be able to care for people with diabetes, dementia or chronic wounds. The university is expanding the degree course in response to the increasing demands in the healthcare sector and the senate's endeavours to make nursing more academic.

Changes to nursing degree course

"The expansion of the Bachelor's degree course is an innovative and forward-looking response to the constantly growing challenges facing the nursing profession," said Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality. The course offered by the Department of Nursing and Management will combine scientific knowledge with practical training and will also focus on specialised care. Students will have access to a "Skills Lab" simulation laboratory to practice  caring for e.g., patients with dementia in real-life situations.

Expansion of study places

HAW Hamburg is also increasing the number of places in its nursing course. In addition to the dual Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Master of Science in Nursing will be extended to include paediatric and community nursing. A supplementary Bachelor's course is being set up for nurses who already have a degree. Both the University of Hamburg and the HAW Hamburg are developing a postgraduate course in nursing and therapy to be taught in vocational schools. "By expanding our academic nursing qualification, we are helping to close potential gaps in the supply of nursing care and attracting more specialists to the Hamburg Metropolitan Region," said Prof. Dr. Ute Lohrentz, President of HAW Hamburg.
