Hamburger Kunsthalle clocks up record 400,000 visitors

6 December 2023
Increase of 18,000 by early December - forecast for 2023 already exceeded

The Hamburger Kunsthalle had notched up a record 400,000 visitors by early December thereby surpassing estimated figures for 2023 and 2022 as well. The marvellous results echo its present "Outstanding" exhibition on relief art, which runs until February 25, 2024.

Diverse exhibitions and attractive collection

A delighted Norbert Kölle, Managing Director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, said: "I am thrilled that we have already reached our visitor target for 2023 a fortnight before the major anniversary exhibition to mark the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich." The museum's success is based on many diverse exhibitions on socially important topics and the appeal of its collection. In 2023, the Hamburger Kunsthalle presented exhibitions entitled "Breathing" and "Femme Fatale", a  double exhibition on Vija Celmins and Gerhard Richter and the collection "1923 - Faces of an Era". The Hamburger Kunsthalle will be presenting the anniversary exhibition "Caspar David Friedrich. Art for a New Age" from December 15, 2023 to April 1, 2024. The comprehensive exhibition features over 60 paintings including rare loans by the Romantic landscape painter, who is generally considered the most important German artist of his generation.
